Jochen Schlenker's image of a majestic Alpine Ibex in the French Alps is a wonderful blend of striking wildlife portrait and breathtaking landscape. Only the males of the species carry these telltale oversized curved horns; the females' horns are considerably smaller. While very social animals, the males and females stay apart most of the year, except during mating season. Recovering from near extinction in the 1800s, the ibex has since been reintroduced to much of its traditional range in the European Alps.
